Who we are and what makes us different?

Kia ora – and welcome to Matcha Mura.

My name is Kyle, when I was 14, I came across an article online that said matcha could help clear up acne. Desperate to try anything, I walked into an Asian grocery store, picked up a tiny tin of matcha, and whisked up my very first cup. I expected something medicinal - and it indeed tasted medicinal and very grassy. Still. I kept drinking it in hopes of clearing my skin.

When I first went to Japan when I was 16 years old, that’s where I discovered what matcha was meant to taste like. complex, smooth and gently sweet.

Coming back to New Zealand I desired to have that kind of matcha again, nothing could scratch the itch here. I did a bunch of research on the best matcha from Japan and routinely ordered hauls from reputable brands in Japan most notably, Ippodo and Tezumi.

Did matcha cure my acne? No. But along the way, I discovered something better: a genuine love for matcha.

Twelve years later, that passion has led me here launching my own matcha brand, with the goal of sharing the kind of matcha that first inspired me (not the type that was from the groceries).

Born from a love for the real thing

Matcha Mura was created out of a deep love for real matcha and a desire to share that with Aotearoa. Not the sweetened powders, not the gimmicks, but the kind of matcha that’s been quietly perfected for centuries in the tea villages of Uji, Kyoto.

For me, matcha has never been just a trendy drink. It’s a craft. A discipline. A reflection of care and heritage. And it deserves to be experienced properly vibrant, smooth, subtly umami, with a natural sweetness that lingers on the tongue.

We don’t compromise

That’s why I made it my mission to source only single-origin ceremonial-grade matcha from Uji, the birthplace of Japan’s finest matcha.

Our matcha is:

  • 🌿 First-harvested, when the leaves are at their peak in nutrients and flavour

  • 🌥️ Shade-grown, to develop deep umami and antioxidants

  • 🪨 Finely stone-ground by traditional mills

  • 🇯🇵 Sourced directly from small, passionate farmers in Uji, Kyoto

Every step is handled with respect — from farm to pouch.
